Over the Memorial Day weekend, we drove down to Los Angeles to visit with Susan and Howie. To our surprise, Los Angeles was festooned in street trees covered in clusters of five-lobed purple trumpet flowers. We learned that these trees are called jacarandas and they are native to Central and Southern America, Mexico and the Caribbean. They are common in the American Southwest as well as in Pretoria, South Africa (known as "The Jacaranda City") and in Brisbane, Australia. Although we have been to Los Angeles on many occasions, we previously never had seen the fleeting glory of the jacarandas.

As always, we had a great time in Los Angeles with Susan who is an incomparable hostess. When we left, Howie bade us farewell on our drive back to Northern California.

Jacaranda trees are beautiful in bloom. We grow these here in the Phoenix area. I had one once, but it was so messy that I would never have another one! Happy GTS,

What a lovely tree. Reminds me of wisteria in colour if not flower type.
Great photos. I like the contrast of the soft lilac purple with the brown seed pods.
I'm on a true botanical tour today as I visit the various GTS sites. I'm discovering many new-to-me plants.
(The fauna Percy and Howie are very cute, too.)
How beautiful!!I'm not familiar with this type of tree. Fabulous photos!
I have never seen one before - they are such a beautiful color!
I've seen them in bloom in Arizona and in central Mexico. They knocked my socks off! You've captured their beauty wonderfully, and I like how the silver agaves beneath them on that streetscape give the scene a misty, magical quality.
You have some great images of Jacarandas here. They are a real sight when they are in bloom!
that is just gorgeous - my favorite color too
