In Greek mythology, anemone (ranunculaceae) grew from the blood of Aprodite's dead lover, Adonis. They are named windflowers because the wind that blows open the petals of the flower also will later blow away the dead petals. Here is an anemone in a shady spot in my backyard which I think is an anemone hybrida or japonica.
